Dram Notes privacy policy
Last updated 8 November 2026.
Dram Notes is an Android app for keeping personal notes on whisky drams. It is made by Owain Williams. This policy explains what the app does with your data. The short version: everything stays on your phone.
What the app stores
The drams you add, with their details, your star ratings, your notes, whether you own a bottle, and the photos you scan or attach. All of it is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. There is no account, no sign-in and no server run by the app's author.
What leaves your phone
Nothing is sent to the app's author or to any analytics or advertising service. The app contains no advertising and no tracking.
Two things involve the network, both only when you ask for them:
- When you paste a bottle's web link, or share a web page to Dram Notes from your browser, the app downloads that page and its product photo from the shop's website to read the bottle's details. That website sees the request as it would from any browser, including your phone's internet address. No other data is sent with it.
- When you choose Back up, the app writes a file to the location you pick, which may be a cloud provider such as Google Drive. That provider's own policy covers the file from then on. The app never talks to any cloud service itself.
Purchases
Dram Notes Pro is a one-off purchase made through Google Play. Google handles the payment under its own terms and privacy policy; the app never sees your payment details. The app asks Google Play whether the purchase exists, and keeps that yes-or-no answer on the phone so Pro works offline. Nothing about the purchase is sent to the app's author.
Camera and photos
Scanning uses the camera, or a photo you pick, only to read the text on a tasting list or a bottle label. Text recognition runs on the device with Google's ML Kit and the image is not uploaded. The cropped image is kept with the dram so you can check what was read; it is deleted when you delete the dram.
Android backup
Android's own backup may include the app's data in your Google account backup, subject to your phone's backup settings. You can turn that off in Android's settings.
Deleting your data
Delete a dram in the app to remove it and its photo. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored. Backup files you made are yours to delete wherever you saved them.
Children
The app is about whisky and is intended for adults of legal drinking age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is shipped inside the app under Settings and published at the same web address.
